No:01016800Shallow bowl with a design of chrysanthemums in overglaze enamels

Date
17C
Technique
overglaze enamels
Shape
shallow bowl
Description
Chrysanthemum flowers are featured, blooming at their best all over this bowl. Conscious of the bowl’s circular shape, chrysanthemum branches are also bent to take on curved shapes. The directions petals face and movement of leaves allow this work’s fluid atmosphere to overflow. There are several reasons this piece seems to have been made in the early days of the Old-Kutani ware: four pigments, yellow, green, violet and ultramarine are used, but there is no use of brim red or cobalt under glazes. In addition, the porcelain content of the clay is much more than usual, and the high foot on the underside is relatively small in size.
