- Description
- The motif is from Sakaki from the Tale of Genji. The box is covered by a high lid. Inside, the left side of the box is used for a tiny cloisonné water vessel and an inkstone, and the right side is used for holding writing brushes. The right corner is also used for holding a small knife. All four corners are rounded. This work made entirely of gold ikakeji lacquer ground. On the top of the lid are depicted a sakaki tree and a torii gate, using atsugai shell and lead plate. A brushwood fence is boldly expressed on the inside and back of this work. The back and inside of the lid features decoratively arranged eulalia grasses, Chinese bellflowers, bush clover and chrysanthemums in mother-of-pearl inlay.
