Description
This is designated as an Important Cultural Asset of the Japanese Nation and a Cultural Property of Ishikawa Prefecture. The passage of the agricultural seasons used to be depicted from right to left in Chinese style. For feudal lords, paintings of agriculture over the four seasons were derived from similar Chinese paintings that were used to remind the aristocracy of the drudgery of their subjects’ lives. The paintings in Kusumi Morikage’s early days follow this rule, but as his painting skills developed, he switched to Japanese layout and depicted the elapse of time from left to right. However, this work is still painted in the Chinese style.
