- Against a brown wash, the masqueraders’ costumes with their striking collars of clear white in the background are seen head-on. The variety of colors on their costumes brings out the special beauty characteristic of Japanese painting pigments. All the faces, to which our eyes are naturally drawn, are lined up sideways and placed slightly above the centerline of the canvas.
