Description
This work is designated an Important Cultural Asset of the Japanese Nation and a Cultural Property of Ishikawa Prefecture. Although the painter appears to lack skill, this work is drawn with vigorous brush strokes, and the face has a vivid immediacy. When Takuan, who protested against the religious policies of the TOKUGAWA Shogunate, was exiled to Uenoyama in Dewa Province in 1629, this painting was praiseworthily installed in the Shun-yu An hermitage in Uenoyama at the request of HONDA Awa Masashige, a senior vassal of the Kaga Fiefdom. This is materially a valuable portrait.
