No:03000400Noh costume, with design of chrysanthemums on a brown ground in Karaori weaving

Date
1810/19C
Description
The chrysanthemum has a special place in Japan as an autumn flower. People in the Heian period drank chrysanthemum sake for longevity at “the chrysanthemum party (Choyo-no-Sekku)” held in the Imperial court every year on September 9th. In this costume, a chrysanthemum design is included as an abstract pattern of ocean waves in the form of a raised design of colored yarns in gold, brown, purplish blue, white and dark green, giving a cool and regal effect.
