Description
The lion was a favorite motif for incense burners used in the tea ceremony as a tea utensil, and was a commonly design for incense burners in Rakuke in Kyoto. This piece, with the dog looking upwards with its mouth gaping open, is regarded as one of Ohi Chozaemon I’s masterworks. It is made of fine, smooth clay and is thickly glazed. Parts of the glaze have melted to a thin yellowish brown but the color is mostly black. The inside of this work is unglazed.
