- The basic theme of this painting comes from a Western legend in which a woman in deep sorrow, whose lover has drowned in the sea, throws herself into the sea and changes into a flying sea mew over the sea forever. On the left side is depicted the woman throwing herself into the sea. The flying sea mew is depicted on the right. The skillful composition of the nude woman and the sea mew transmits a sense of pathos in symbolic colors.
