Description
SHOKADO Shojo became a priest at the Iwashimizu Hachiman-gu Shrine near Kyoto, learned from Jitsujo in Takimoto priest’s house and then became a priest at this priest’s house. He was a calligraphy artist as accomplished as Shoshosai, one of the most celebrated 3 penmen in the Kan-ei period (1624-1644). He was also a talented painter and tea expert. He is believed to have contributed equally with Enshu to the development of the art of tea. The Tsuyu has a round tip in ippon-toi style. This work is in arigoshi style and made of Shiratake bamboo. Its case is noted “Yahatayama, Shikibukyo, Chief of Ceremonies” with a written statement by Kohitsu Ryoi IX.
