- Description
- The landscape extends over the whole surface of the top lid in polished lacquer. In the lower area, a fisherman is casting his net. SAWADA Sotaku shows his refined skills in maki-e lacquerwork. The mountains, the clouds and the inlet are represented in blue and gold. The bank and the rocks are depicted as the square gold plates, a common technique in Kaga maki-e. On the reverse side of the lid can be seen three cranes and Mt. Horai with roaring waves, portrayed in polished lacquer. The jagged rocks in the sea, the cranes and the sun, which are propitious signs, are arranged inside the box.
